Sankaty Head Light stands on a bluff above the village of Siasconset, at the eastern end of Nantucket, where the island meets open Atlantic water. The light was first lit in 1850 to warn mariners off a stretch of shoals and dangerous sandbars that had claimed many ships. Its exposed position has made it a constant battle against erosion, and the tower was moved inland in 2007 to keep it from the cliff's edge. The lighthouse remains one of the most recognizable landmarks on the island's south-eastern shore.
