A stone lighthouse rises from the end of a breakwater, with the masts of sailboats crowding the harbor behind it. Breakwaters like this one were built to shelter anchorages from heavy swells, and the lighthouse at the end guided vessels safely past the rocks and shoals at the harbor mouth. The pairing of a solid masonry tower with working sailing craft is a reminder of how closely lighthouses, harbors and small-boat traffic depended on one another. Notice how the masts cluster in the middle distance, a visual record of the busy waterfront these lights were built to serve.
