A squat stone base carries the lantern tower in this view, and a small boat rides the water just offshore, which gives a sense of scale that many lighthouse pictures leave out. Lighthouses of this kind were built to mark dangerous coasts and harbor approaches, and the sturdy masonry base was meant to withstand wind and heavy seas while the lantern above threw its light out over the water to warn passing ships. The boat in the foreground hints at the working traffic these towers served, from fishing crews to coastal freight. Look at how the stonework and the tower's proportions were designed to read clearly from a distance, since a lighthouse's shape mattered as much as its light for identifying a location at sea.
