Few lighthouses in the gallery keep their supporting buildings as clearly as this one does. A low stone tower stands beside a white picket fence and a small wooden shed, a reminder that a light station was a working compound and not just a tower on a point. Keepers and their families depended on outbuildings like these for storing fuel, oil and tools, and the fence marked the boundary between the station grounds and the open shore. Lighthouse complexes of this kind were often built with local stone, and their modest layout shows how little ornament was considered necessary on a working aid to navigation.
