Mattapoisett's lighthouse stands at the harbor mouth on Buzzard's Bay, the protected water along southeastern Massachusetts that connects to the broader coastal shipping lanes. Photographer Walter Payton recorded it in September 1940, a period when the country's coastal defenses and maritime traffic were drawing growing attention. The print later passed through the records of the Office of War Information's Overseas Picture Division, which handled wartime photographs for overseas audiences, and the 1944 transfer date reflects that move. Lighthouses like this one were among the most familiar landmarks of the New England coast, guiding fishing boats and coastal vessels into port.
