Chatham's lighthouse stands at the elbow of Cape Cod, where the land bends sharply and sandbars once wrecked ships working their way along the coast. Lighthouses were built on this stretch to warn mariners away from the shifting shoals that reached far offshore, and the town's station became a familiar landmark for fishing crews and coastal traffic. Its tower and keeper's buildings reflect the working life of the Cape, where the light was tended by hand for generations. Notice the plain, sturdy lines of the structure, which were chosen for durability against harsh Atlantic winds.
