Few lighthouses sit as close to a major bridge as the small red tower at Jeffrey's Hook, which stands in the shadow of the George Washington Bridge's Manhattan end. The bridge opened in 1931 to link Fort Lee, New Jersey, with Washington Heights, and the lighthouse, built in 1921 to guide river traffic past the rocky point, was decommissioned in 1947 once the span made it unnecessary. A 1942 children's book about the tower and the bridge helped keep its story alive, and the contrast between the modest red light and the steel span is what makes this view worth a closer look.
