The red-painted tower in the foreground stands on Jeffrey's Hook, on the Manhattan shore of the Hudson, where it sits beneath the span of the George Washington Bridge. The lighthouse dates to the early 1920s and guided river traffic for decades, while the bridge, which opened in 1931, rose far above it. The pairing of a small working beacon with a towering steel suspension span became a well-loved New York image, later the subject of a 1942 children's book. Searchlights sweeping the sky suggest the nighttime ceremonial lighting that drew crowds to the bridge in its early years.
