Lighthouse optics like this one, a section and plan of a revolving catoptric light, show how keepers' lamps were engineered to throw a beam far out to sea. "Catoptric" refers to systems that use mirrors, typically a ring of curved reflectors set around a lamp, which were the standard method for lighthouses in the 19th century before refracting lenses became dominant. Turning the mirror assembly on a clockwork mechanism produced the flashing or revolving signal that sailors learned to tell apart from neighboring lights. Drawings like this one were used by engineers and lamp makers to plan construction and to explain how the parts fit together.
