The staircase in this view rises past an ornate newel light standard, one of the decorative fixtures that give the interior of Pittsburgh's Allegheny County Courthouse its character. Henry Hobson Richardson designed the building in the Romanesque Revival style, and it was completed in 1888, a few years after his death. Taken around 1975, the photograph belongs to the Seagram County Courthouse Archives, a 1970s documentation project that recorded American courthouses. The image was later reproduced in *Eyes of the Nation*, a visual history of the United States.
