Labeled "Bains," the French word for baths, this color lithograph shows a bathing house drawn in the clean, geometric style of Paris-based architect Rob Mallet-Stevens. It appears as plate 12 in *A Modern City*, a book of his designs published by Benn Brothers in London and dated 1922 in the record, a period when many European architects were moving away from ornament toward simpler forms. A public bathhouse was a typical civic building in such plans, reflecting the era's emphasis on hygiene and public amenities in city design.
