This color lithograph shows a garage design rather than a finished building, and it appears as plate 13 in *A Modern City*, a volume of designs by the architect Rob Mallet-Stevens. The London publisher Benn Brothers issued the book in 1922, a period when the automobile was reshaping city planning and architects were working out how to house cars within the urban fabric. Mallet-Stevens was a French architect associated with the modernist movement of the 1920s, and his drawings pair clean geometric forms with a vision of the city as a place built around new technology. The plate is a useful record of how designers imagined the storage and servicing of vehicles as part of modern urban life.
