Titled "Maisons ouvrières," or workers' houses, this color lithograph is a design plate by the French architect Rob Mallet-Stevens, reproduced as plate 14 in *A Modern City*. The book was published in London by Benn Brothers, and the catalog gives the date as approximately 1922 because the imprint shows it in brackets. The subject, cheap housing for laborers, was a live concern in the years after World War I, when European cities faced acute housing shortages and architects were testing new ideas about affordable, standardized dwellings. The drawing is worth looking at for how it presents modern housing as orderly, repeatable, and close to the street.
