Among the pictures on this board, this color lithograph stands out for its title, *Mairie*, the French word for town hall, and its place as plate 17 in *A Modern City*, a set of designs by the French architect Rob Mallet-Stevens, published in London by Benn Brothers around 1922. Mallet-Stevens was a leading figure in French modern architecture, and his civic designs favored clean planes, unbroken walls, and geometric massing over the historical ornament of older municipal halls. The print shows how the postwar generation imagined public buildings as expressions of a new, rational age. It is worth noticing how the image presents the town hall as a clear statement of civic order rather than as a scene set within a real street.
