This color lithograph shows a theater design by Rob Mallet-Stevens, the French architect known for his stark, geometric modernism. It appeared as plate 18 in *A Modern City*, a portfolio of his visionary urban designs published in London in 1922. The plates were made to show how a city could be rebuilt around new materials and clean forms, with public buildings such as theaters given a central place. Mallet-Stevens's work of this period helped shape the Art Deco and early modernist styles that spread through European architecture in the 1920s.
