Plate 20 in *A Modern City*, a book by the French architect Rob Mallet-Stevens, shows a cemetery as one part of a larger urban vision, with burial grounds arranged with the same order as the houses and streets around them. Mallet-Stevens worked in the 1920s, when European architects were rethinking how cities should be laid out after World War I. This color lithograph was published in London by Benn Brothers around 1922, which made the designs available to English-speaking readers. Its clean geometry and sparse ornament reflect the modernist ideals of the period.
