Titled *Usine électrique* ("electrical works"), this color lithograph shows an imagined power plant rather than a real site. It appeared as plate 22 in *A Modern City*, a set of designs by the Paris-based architect Rob Mallet-Stevens, published in London by Benn Brothers around 1922. Mallet-Stevens was a leading figure in 1920s modernist architecture, and his work favored clean geometric forms and bold masses. The print shows how European designers of the period pictured utility buildings as emblems of the modern machine age.
