This color lithograph presents a hospital as imagined within a planned city, drawn by the French architect Rob Mallet-Stevens for his scheme *A Modern City*. It appears as plate 23 in that published volume, and its London imprint from Benn Brothers shows how widely Continental modernist ideas circulated in English-language architectural publishing after the First World War. The plate reflects the early 1920s belief that hospitals, like schools and rail stations, could be organized as orderly parts of a rational urban whole. Notice the strict geometry and separated blocks, which contrast sharply with the crowded hospital layouts of the period.
