The office of the receiver of direct contributions, a French tax office, is the subject here, and it is an unusual choice for a civic building. This color lithograph appears as plate 24 in *A Modern City*, a collection of designs by the Belgian-born French architect Rob Mallet-Stevens, published in London by Benn Brothers in 1922. The clean, unornamented forms reflect the modernist ideas Mallet-Stevens was promoting at the time, a clear break from the heavy classical styles usually used for government buildings. The image shows that even routine public administration was being reimagined in new architectural terms between the wars.
