Plate 27 from *A Modern City*, a set of designs by Rob Mallet-Stevens, this color lithograph shows a church under the French title "Église," which places it within a continental vision of city building rather than an English one. Belgian-born and active mainly in France, Mallet-Stevens was a leading figure in the modernist architecture of the 1920s, favoring clean geometric volumes, flat roofs and reinforced concrete over traditional ornament. The print was issued in London by Benn Brothers around 1922, a sign of how European modernist ideas were circulating among English-speaking readers in the years after the First World War.
