Plate 30 in *A Modern City*, Rob Mallet-Stevens's designs published in London by Benn Brothers, shows a *maison de rapport*, the French term for a rental apartment block. The color lithograph presents the building as an orderly, repeated block of flats, the kind of housing that European architects of the early 1920s hoped would bring light and order to crowded cities. Mallet-Stevens was one of the French designers associated with modernism in that decade, and the plate offers a useful view of how urban housing was imagined just after the First World War. Its flat, geometric facade is worth noticing.
