This color lithograph shows a design for a *magasin de nouveautés*, the French term for a department store that sold fashion, fabrics, and household goods under one roof. It was reproduced as plate 29 in *A Modern City*, a London volume from Benn Brothers that presented designs by the French architect Rob Mallet-Stevens. The print dates to about 1922, a period when modernist architects were rethinking commercial buildings as clean, geometric forms suited to the new consumer culture of the city.
