The French word in the title, *beffroi*, names the tower that housed a town's bells, and in many medieval towns it also served as a civic lookout and symbol of local rights. This color lithograph reimagines that old form in modern terms. It appeared as plate 28 in *A Modern City*, a set of designs by the French architect Rob Mallet-Stevens, whose early 1920s work helped shape modernist architecture with its clean planes and geometric masses. The print was issued in London by Benn Brothers in 1922, offering English-speaking readers a view of how a new city might keep its civic landmarks while leaving behind the ornament of the past.
