This color lithograph shows an *auberge*, or inn, drawn as a modern building rather than a rustic roadside house. Benn Brothers of London published it around 1922, and it appears as plate 32 in *A Modern City*, a book of designs by the Paris-based architect Rob Mallet-Stevens. Mallet-Stevens was a leading figure in the modernist architecture of the 1920s, and his clean geometric forms show how European designers of that decade were rethinking even ordinary buildings like inns.
