Rendered in color as plate 21 of *A Modern City*, this lithograph shows a design for a law court, or Palais de justice, by the French architect Rob Mallet-Stevens. The book, published in London by Benn Brothers in 1922, presented his proposals for an idealized contemporary city, a vision that drew on the clean lines and geometric massing of the modernist architecture then emerging in Europe. Civic buildings such as courthouses were a common subject in these speculative designs, which aimed to show how public institutions might look in a planned, modern city. The drawing offers a useful record of how architects of the early 1920s imagined the look of justice in the modern age.
