A design for a gendarmerie, the French national police station, sets this color lithograph apart from the other pictures on this board. It appears as plate 16 in *A Modern City*, a set of designs by the French architect Rob Mallet-Stevens, published in London by Benn Brothers in 1922. Mallet-Stevens was a leading figure in French modernism, and his civic projects of the period favor clean geometric masses and flat planes that reflect a faith in order and efficiency.
