The title, *Hôtel de voyageurs*, French for a travelers' hotel, marks this color lithograph as an architectural design for a building type rather than a view of a specific place. It was reproduced as plate 15 in *A Modern City*, a book of designs by the French architect Rob Mallet-Stevens, who was a leading figure in modern architecture in Paris during the 1920s. The London firm Benn Brothers published the volume in 1922, a period when European architects were moving away from historical ornament toward clean lines and new materials for hotels, stations and other public buildings.
