Edison's New Year's Eve demonstration at Menlo Park, New Jersey, in late December 1879 drew crowds who rode special trains from New York to see the new electric lights glowing along the village streets and inside the laboratory. This wood engraving, published in The Daily Graphic on January 3, 1880, pictures those scenes as illustrators of the day imagined them, combining the lamps, the crowds and the workshop into one page. The event was a public showing of the incandescent bulb, which Edison had developed over the previous year, and newspapers across the country covered it as a milestone in lighting.
