Thomas Edison's West Orange (listed here as Orange) laboratory was the workplace where he and a team of machinists, chemists and assistants turned out a steady stream of inventions, and this group portrait gathers most of them in one frame. The image was made around 1893 by William Kennedy Laurie Dickson, a British-born engineer who worked closely with Edison and was himself a pioneer of motion picture equipment. Dickson's photograph was later reproduced in *The Life and Inventions of Edison*, a book that helped shape the public image of Edison as a tireless inventor leading an organized research team.
