Edison is shown full-length and seated at his desk, turned to the left, with a second man, identified only as Mr. Wilson, in the frame beside him. The picture dates to about 1913 and was registered for copyright under the name of Thomas A. Edison, which suggests it was issued as a publicity image of the inventor at work. By then Edison was in his mid-sixties and widely known as the man behind the phonograph and the commercial electric light, and portraits like this one shaped how the public pictured the inventor at his desk. The copyright notation and the "Homes & haunts" subject heading point to a set of studio and home portraits made for the press.
