Edison is shown here seated in a swivel chair outside his office, turned to the left, in a full-length pose that feels more relaxed than most of his formal studio portraits. The image is usually dated to about 1895, a stretch when Edison was running a sprawling network of companies built around the phonograph, motion pictures and electric power, and he was well known to the public as a tireless experimenter. The print carries a copyright credit to Kreidler & Crider, a photographic firm, which suggests it was made for commercial sale and circulation. The date and attribution come from an old caption card, so they are best treated as provisional.
