Thomas Edison sits at center in this c1929 portrait, with Henry Ford on his right and the plant breeder Luther Burbank beside him, three figures who shaped American industry and agriculture. The men were close friends and, with Harvey Firestone and John Burroughs, formed the Vagabonds, a group that took yearly camping trips together. Edison, then in his early eighties, had made his name with the phonograph and the practical incandescent lamp, while Ford's Model T had put automobiles within reach of ordinary families. The relaxed seating and close framing suggest a social gathering rather than a formal business occasion.
