Edison is shown full-length, standing and facing left, in the chemical room of his West Orange laboratory, with a workman beside him among the bottles and apparatus. The Byron Company of New York made many photographs of Edison and his operations in the early 1900s, and this image reflects the publicity work that kept the inventor's name before the public. The chemical room was where Edison's team tested battery materials, phonograph and motion-picture components, and new compounds, so the setting itself documents the sprawling research effort behind his patents. Note that the date of about 1906 comes from the caption card and has not been independently verified.
