Edison is shown here at half-length, working in a chemical laboratory, a setting that points to the research side of his career rather than the public image of him with a phonograph or light bulb. Dated around 1905, the picture comes from a period when Edison's West Orange, New Jersey, laboratory was a busy center of experimentation, and his team was testing materials and chemical processes for batteries, phonographs, and motion pictures. The photograph was made by Brown Brothers, a commercial studio that supplied images to newspapers and magazines, so it was intended for wide public circulation. Because the caption card's details are unverified, the exact occasion is uncertain, but the image still shows the hands-on laboratory work behind his patents.
