Here Thomas Edison stands full length in a garden, turned to the left, with a cactus rising behind him, a more relaxed setting than the laboratory benches and workshops usually associated with his name. The print dates from about 1931, the year Edison died at his home in West Orange, New Jersey, at age 84. By then he was among the most famous inventors in the world, credited with the practical incandescent lamp, the phonograph, and a large body of work on motion pictures and industrial research. The photograph is worth a closer look for how it presents the aging inventor as a private figure at home rather than a man at his machines.
