Thomas Alva Edison appears here in a three-quarter-length standing pose, turned to the left and posed among his family, a rarer subject than the inventor alone at his workbench. The record dates the print to around March 9, 1920, and the copyright notation credits Thomas A. Edison, Inc., the company that handled his patents, recordings and publicity. By then Edison was in his seventies and already a national celebrity, known for the incandescent lamp, the phonograph and the motion picture camera. Portraits like this one were part of how his public image was built, presenting the famous inventor as a family man as well.
