Thomas Alva Edison sits three-quarters length and faces the camera directly in this c1922 portrait, a studio image from the Bachrach firm, whose name appears in the copyright note on the record. Edison was then in his mid-seventies and already one of the most famous inventors in the country, known for the phonograph, the practical incandescent lamp and the motion picture camera. Portraits like this one were produced in quantity for magazines, newspapers and public relations, so they tell us as much about how Edison wanted to be seen as about his appearance. The Library of Congress holds it in the Prints and Photographs Division.
