Thomas Alva Edison sits in this half-length portrait turned to the left, a pose typical of the studio portraiture of the early 1920s, when he was already one of the most famous men in America. The print carries a copyright notation for Bachrach, the Baltimore studio that made many of the formal portraits of prominent figures of the era. Edison, who held more than a thousand patents, was by then in his mid-seventies and widely regarded as the embodiment of the American inventor, so portraits like this one helped shape the public image of a self-taught tinkerer turned industrial celebrity.
