Edison strolls the yard at his West Orange laboratory in New Jersey with two men named Miller, one of them Miller Reese Hutchinson, an inventor and patent lawyer who worked with him on telephone and hearing-aid devices. Taken around 1914, when Edison was in his mid-sixties, the picture shows a sprawling campus of machine shops and research buildings that housed his many enterprises, from phonographs to storage batteries. A major fire swept through much of that complex in December 1914, so the scene records the grounds shortly before that loss. The relaxed outdoor pose suggests how Edison often worked, moving among colleagues rather than staying behind a desk.
