The title names this picture's subject: Thomas Edison posed with what the caption calls his original dynamo, set in the engine room of the Edison Works in Orange, New Jersey. Dynamos converted mechanical power into electricity, and Edison's early generating machines were central to his push to supply homes and businesses with electric light and power in the 1880s. By around 1906, when this stereograph was made, Edison was a famous figure whose name was tied to the electrical age, and images like this one showed him beside the equipment that had launched his commercial work. Stereo cards like this were sold for viewing through a hand stereoscope, so the picture was meant to give the viewer a sense of depth in the machinery and the room.
