Few American inventors were as closely tied to one place as Thomas Edison was to Menlo Park, New Jersey, where he set up his laboratory in 1876. This wood engraving shows his home there, drawn from a sketch by the illustrator Theodore R. Davis and published in *Harper's Weekly* on January 3, 1880. That was a busy stretch for Edison, who had recently developed his practical incandescent lamp, and the magazine's interest reflected how widely the press followed his work. The view offers a glimpse of the domestic side of a site better known for its workshops and the experiments that made the name "Menlo Park" famous.
