Three men who shaped American industry and public life stand together in this full-length portrait taken at Thomas Edison's winter home in Fort Myers, Florida. Edison, the inventor of the phonograph and a pioneer of electric lighting, is joined by Henry Ford, whose automobile company was then reshaping manufacturing, and the naturalist and essayist John Burroughs, a longtime friend of both men. The three were known to spend time together on camping and fishing trips in the years before World War I, and the photograph captures that friendship in a relaxed, informal pose. Its copyright registration credits the photographer Hunt, and it is one of the better-known images of the trio.
