Taken around 1911, this portrait shows Thomas Alva Edison in his mid-sixties, when he was among the best-known inventors in the United States and still running a busy research operation. Its subject headings tie it to Edison's laboratories of the 1910s, the West Orange, New Jersey, complex where he worked on projects ranging from phonographs and storage batteries to motion pictures. The print's notes cite a U.S. Copyright Office registration, a reminder that studio portraits of famous figures were often distributed and protected as public images, which is worth keeping in mind when looking at how Edison's reputation was shaped.
