Printed as a magazine advertisement in the January 13, 1912, issue of the *Saturday Evening Post* (page 36), this halftone shows the Edison phonograph at a time when the machine was a fixture of American parlors. Thomas Edison had patented the phonograph in 1878, and by the 1910s his company was promoting its cylinder machines to a mass audience through national magazines like the *Post*, which reached millions of middle-class readers each week. The halftone process, which broke a photograph into tiny dots that a press could reproduce, made images like this affordable to print in bulk, so the ad reflects both the product and the new printing technology of the period.
