Washington, D.C., hosted the public debut of Thomas A. Edison's radio phonograph in 1928, a machine that combined a radio receiver with a record player in a single cabinet. Edison, then in his eighties, had built his reputation on the phonograph decades earlier, so the new combination showed how quickly radio had become a fixture in American homes during the late 1920s. The photograph was made by Underwood & Underwood, a commercial news photography agency, which points to the press attention a product launch like this drew in the capital.
