The drawing shows a Washington's birthday ball held on February 22, 1864, by the Second Corps of the Army of the Potomac at its camp near Brandy Station, Virginia. The Second Corps was commanded by Gen. Winfield Scott Hancock, whose name appears in the record. Winter quarters in the Virginia countryside gave officers a rare chance to hold formal social events, and Washington's birthday was a patriotic occasion for such gatherings. Drawn in pencil, the sketch records a dance held in the middle of a long war, when the army was resting and preparing for the spring campaign.
