Few dance prints of the period name their setting as precisely as this one, which places its satire in Spanish Town, the capital of British-ruled Jamaica. The title promises a "Creolean hop," and the London publisher William Holland issued many caricature prints mocking fashionable manners. The dedication to a lady styled "Custodi morum," or guardian of morals, adds a sly edge, suggesting the ball's excesses were meant as a scandal for polite London society to enjoy. Hand-colored etchings like this gave metropolitan audiences a way to laugh at colonial society from a distance.
