A rough watercolor sketch of a dance in a country tavern, the scene stands out for the almanac hanging on the wall, which gives a date of about 1820. The drawing is tied to an 1819 oil painting, Country Frolic and Dance, and it bears a close resemblance to a George Lehman lithograph of about 1835 to 1836 titled Dance in a Country Tavern, so it likely records a popular subject that artists returned to over many years. Taverns of this period were common gathering places where fiddle music and dancing drew neighbors together after work or at local celebrations. The sketch is valued for its informal record of rural social life in the early nineteenth-century United States.
