Girls and children in Newark, Ohio, gather around a ring toss game in this 1899 platinum print by Clarence H. White, who was working in his hometown when he made it. White later helped found the Photo-Secession in 1902, a group that promoted photography as an art form. Platinum printing, prized by pictorialist photographers for its soft tonal range and matte surface, gives the scene a quiet, painterly feel. The picture is a useful record of everyday play in a small Midwestern city at the turn of the century.
