*The Power of Music* is a color chromolithograph, printed by Duval & Hunter of Philadelphia from a design by J. F. Queen after a painting by A. Durcks. A. & C. Kaufmann published it in New York in 1872, and its subjects, listed as families, dance, and music, reflect the parlor entertainments that many middle-class households enjoyed at the time. Chromolithography was then a popular and affordable way to bring painted domestic scenes into ordinary homes, and this print shows how the medium turned genre paintings into decorative objects for the family sitting room.
